In today’s world, businesses and organisations are having to adjust to whole new regimes of safety legislation on an almost weekly basis. Revolving-door policies relating to social distancing, remote working and lockdowns give health and safety professionals a lot of new information to absorb.
Thankfully, we know that many people in our profession excel at this, meaning that workers, customers and the public in general are kept safe even in these troubled times.
A new healthy, safe normal
Every workplace change and adaptation that has taken place over the last year needs careful health and safety consideration and policy making. Some of this, like the two-metre rule, is obvious and well known. Some requires some thought though. Are the home computers and desks of staff members set up for long periods of work, or could they lead to injury? Poor quality chairs, low monitors and lack of office space can lead to muscle damage and bad posture, for example.
These new risks need careful consideration, but so do the old challenges we are used to dealing with.
Out with the old and in with the new?
The risk from all of this adjustment to new ways is that the familiar old policies can fall by the wayside. Especially when health and safety budgets and other resources are stretched thin.
It’s easy to forget old knowledge with so much new information coming in. This is why it remains as important as ever, if not more so, to keep workplace health, safety and first aid skills and competencies up to date with annual refreshers and practice.
With hospitals busier and riskier than ever, the ability to prevent sickness and injury, and to treat minor incidents on site, is invaluable to your business and society in general.
It’s not just about skills though. Remember to keep a check on first aid kits, fire safety equipment personal protection equipment and any other safety items in the workplace. This is especially important when people return to the workplace after a long time at home.
Fire drills and health and safety inspections are other essential ways of getting back into the swing of things after working from home.
