Post-lockdown bubbles – Lots of growth followed by a big pop
You probably won’t be surprised to hear that as we get out of lockdown and clamour to go back to our favourite shops, pubs and holiday destinations, jobs in these areas are predicted to rise. Yes, retail, hospitality and leisure are going to be hit by a bonanza of demanding customers this summer.
That doesn’t mean people looking for jobs should be as eager to get into these places as the people who use them though. Like all bubbles, this one is likely to pop as quickly as it inflates. As furlough support ends and the economy flatlines, these are likely to be the areas worst affected by consumers ‘locking down’ their wallets and purses again .
Reliable growth areas
Ecommerce and delivery
This is one lockdown boom that is unlikely to go bust any time soon. Indeed, economists are predicting that this positive trend will stay with us, becoming part of the ‘new normal.
As Amazon continues to rake in money from remote shoppers, many of its competitors are working hard to catch up with the Silicon Valley monster. More and more businesses are predicted to start boosting supply to meet demand in this way over the coming years. New jobs will stretch from delivery drivers to supply chain managers to evocatively named ‘fulfilment operatives’.
Digital creatives
The boom in this sector was well underway back in the days when we could go to the supermarket without personal protective equipment and a rock-solid reason why. The web’s structure has evolved beyond its original form reflecting the old broadcast media, where a few empowered people broadcast to the masses. Now it’s a place of many, many voices, and creatives are needed to get those voices heard, from writers and visual artists to marketing professionals and web designers. This trend is unlikely to slow down given the growth of e-commerce and remote working.
Construction
Okay, this is a bit of a long shot. The government has been promising to kick off construction, and particularly home-building, in the UK for well over a decade now. Recently though, changes to planning legislation and promises of sizeable stimuli have made these promises sound closer to reality. It may take a while as the UK recovers financially, but this once-reliable employment sector could get on the front foot again.
Private education-support roles
As parents look to limit and remedy the negative effects of lockdown on their children, this area has seen a lot of demand and new job creation. People trying to fill their time in lockdown with personal development have also contributed. Tutors and freelance markers, as well as private course deliverers and designers, are suddenly in high demand.
