We’re not here to tell you to wear a suit or smile. You know that. These serious tips are designed to put you in the top 10% of job hunters that get considered carefully for the roles they apply for.
1. Find out five things about the company that no other applicants will know.
Go beyond simply reading the job description and do some in-depth research into the company. Find out some important but little-known facts and drop them into your answers on the covering letter and in the interview. If you’re going for a marketing role and can tell them how you would have helped with each bit of their last campaign, you’re already two steps ahead.
2. Apply for fewer jobs and put in more work for each
Applying to five jobs selectively and carefully is often better than applying to 50 quickly and carelessly. Research the company, figure out why you’re a good fit, prepare thoroughly and tailor every part of your application as much as possible, from your CV to the final interview. Different employers want different things, so don’t give them all the same CV and interview spiel or you won’t put across your value.
3. Treat job hunting as a full-time job
Dedicate 30-40 hours per week to training for and finding a job and you will already be at the top of the game before you even head to your interviews. Most job hunters spend around 15-25 hours per week searching, so you will be ahead of them straight away. Schedule your time and subdivide it between different tasks like searching for roles, applying, writing CVs and personal development.
4. Approach your ideal employers
Don’t just wait for jobs to come on the market. Be proactive and approach employers who you could fit well with or who you might like to work for. It might seem pushy to those who haven’t tried it but it shows eagerness, initiative and self-confidence, as well as telling the hirer that you would be a dedicated employee.Just figure out a good reason why they should give you a job.
5. Learn and develop your career while you search
You can still advance your career while you’re unemployed. Take a course, learn a new skill, improve your CV and expand on what you have to offer prospective employers.
